I got an e-mail today from one of my clients who lives in North Port, Florida. I guess a neighbor came screaming to his door yesterday -- something about a big snake -- he comes out to find the following:

He is told to contain the snake until animal control gets there....fun huh?
For those of you NOT from FL that is a Diamondback RATTLE SNAKE!!!
YUCK - That thing is HUGE!!!

Isn't an Easternback? I dunno...that's bigger than any I've seen....
How'd he "contain" it? Did he do a snake dance?
I'd have contained it with the Car...sorry activists, it's my kids safety we're talking about...
Then again, if this was someone's pet maybe a neighbor has a gator they could let loose, then someone with a tiger, and someone with a bear, maybe that'd contain the snake. Oh...wait...nevermind.
Diamond back rattle snacks are all over Florida and grow up to 8 ft long. In my neck of the woods thats dinner!!!!

The Eastern Diamondback Rattle snake is a common Florida snake, although their numbers are dwindling due to construction. They share burrows with the gopher tortoise.
I should probably be careful walking through the woods around my home because I have 5 gopher turtle burrows. I would not want to stumble across anything that remotely resembles a rattle snake!
Our first offical snake sighting at our home came two nights ago in the form of a green (or brown) garden snake.......
Thank goodness it wasn't dangerous...(or so I think...)
Susan, funny that you posted this, just the other day I am walking out the door of my own house and I go to get in the car and out from under the car pops a small gator about 2.5 foot long. I reach down to grab it and it almost took my hand off. I finally did catch it with the help of my daughters Tennis racket, funny thing was I went to drop it in the Lake behind the House and there is Mama, the whole 10 foot of her...... Be Careful out there!
Wow Jay,
That's pretty crazy....
My snake photos are not nearly as impressive as yours, but as a fellow Floridian, I understand how frightening snakes can be. This little guy visits me every once in a while and he(she?) seems very nice and tame. I just have to be careful when walking the dog at night!
Susan- I have NO idea! I don't know much about them. But as far as I know, he is not dangerous (or so they tell me!)
