Hurricane Season

Being in SW Florida, I hear concerns from people about Hurricanes from time to time. We usually end up discussing historical data, newest hurricane codes & then I typically go into 'natural disasters elsewhere'.

Honestly, I cannot think of a single place to live that there won't be something weatherwise to concern yourself with. Basically it comes down to picking the ones that least annoy you, or maybe are least likely to kill you.

Here are some I can think of:

Hurricanes

Tornadoes

Mudslides

Blizzards

Fires

Floods

Heat

Wind

Earthquakes

I found an article put on USA Today that goes into more detail about these things.

They also have a cool interactive map to show you where these natural disasters occur.

So, what natural disasters do you have to explain in your area?

Oh, I almost forget Florida is also the lightning Capital of the World :)

But I can't see myself living anywhere else!

Hi Susan:

I live in Colorado, and we have blizzards.  We were buried under close to eight feet of snow a few years back.  Every place has their issues.

Thanks for the great post!

I used to live in College Station, Texas, where we had occasional Northers come through with sub-zero weather. Then during the summer, we had a hundred days of 100° heat. Then the winter also brought ice, sleet, and the occasional snowstorm. Then the spring brought inches and inches of rain, all in the same hour. Then we had a 100 days of drought.

I love just about anything south of I-10 because I really do love being able to go outside as much as possible during the year, and San Diego is the best that I've found because of the Mediterranean climate with its lack of humidity and mosquitoes. Not that mosquitoes don't exist here. It's just that they actually are smaller than birds out here.

By the way, we do have four seasons here: rain season, drought season, fire season, and tourist season.

As long as Mother and Father Nature rule the universe, and have their occasional spats like all couples do, there will be problems regardless of where you live.
